A good Chat is a working session. It is a poor archive. You cannot hand a colleague “that thread from Thursday.” You cannot trust that Copilot will find it next month. If the work has a next meeting, it needs a surface that survives the tab.
Threads vanish. Work you will reopen needs a home.
This is not an argument against Chat. It is a routing rule: draft in Chat, then put the keepers somewhere with a name.
Core principles
- Chat: speed, iteration, throwaway options, one sitting.
- If you will reopen it, copy the keepers out before you close the tab.
- A named file or Page beats “I will search my history.”
- Personal Brain files are input. Surfaces are where the work sits while you think.

When should work leave Copilot Chat?
Chat is a sitting. Durable work needs a named home. Throwaway drafts can die in the thread.
Do this in Copilot
Find one Chat from the last two weeks you might need again. Name the project in five words. That name is Lessons 2–5.
Paste into that Chat, or into a new Chat with a short paste of the keepers.
Decide whether this thread should graduate
Here is a Copilot Chat I might need again: [PASTE THE KEEPERS, NOT THE WHOLE THREAD]. Project name: [FIVE WORDS]. Tell me whether this should stay a one-sitting Chat or graduate to a Page, a Notebook, a Loop component, or a Word/OneDrive file. One recommendation, one reason, and what I should copy out in the next ten minutes. If I do not have Notebooks or Pages, say so and pick the fallback I can open today.
Did you run this in Copilot? Mark complete when you have tried it.
