People say “Copilot” the way they used to say “Google.” It hides three different tools. Copilot Chat (often labeled Basic) reasons over the public web and files you attach. Microsoft 365 Copilot (often labeled Premium) can also use work data from email, files, meetings, and chats you already can open. Consumer Microsoft Copilot is for a personal account. It is not a MillerKnoll work tool.
Chat, Copilot, and consumer are not the same product.
You do not need an admin console to start. Open the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, look under your name, and write down the label you actually have. The rest of this course branches from that line.
Core principles
- Copilot Chat: web plus attachments you choose. Included with many Microsoft 365 work accounts.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot: web plus Graph work data you already have permission to see, plus in-app Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
- Consumer Microsoft Copilot: personal account. Never put MillerKnoll or customer work there.
- If a colleague’s Copilot “knows the project” and yours does not, they may have a different license, not a better prompt.

What is the useful first move when Copilot “does not know your files”?
Chat cannot invent Graph access. Licensed Copilot still only sees what you can open. The label tells you which of those is true. Consumer Copilot is not a work workaround.
Do this in Copilot
Open m365.cloud.microsoft (or the Copilot app). Write the exact label under your name. Keep that line for Lessons 2 and 3.
Paste into Copilot Chat. Fill the label from your screen, not from memory.
Decode the label you actually have
I am mapping which Copilot I have at work. The label under my name in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app says: [PASTE THE LABEL EXACTLY]. Ask me two questions to confirm whether this is Copilot Chat (web-grounded) or Microsoft 365 Copilot (work data via Graph). Then tell me, in four bullets: what this label can see, what it cannot see, whether I should attach files on purpose, and one mistake people with this label make. Do not assume I have a paid Copilot add-on unless the label clearly says so. Do not recommend consumer ChatGPT or consumer Microsoft Copilot for MillerKnoll work.
