Start Every Session with the Brief
Copilot in Excel does not load your Copilot Brief sheet on its own. At the start of every new Copilot chat in this workbook — including when you begin analysis — send the session-start prompt.
Lesson 4
Same workbook, new chat — same rules.
The analysis half of this course only works after Copilot confirms it read the brief and lists the rules it will follow.
Core principles
- New chat = repeat the session-start prompt. No exceptions.
- Default to Clean Data; touch Raw Data only when you explicitly ask.
- Descriptive summaries (totals, year-over-year, simple charts) are fair game for quick use — still spot-check.
- Forecasts, causal claims, and leadership commitments need heavier verification — or data science support.
- Loop in data science for new formal forecasting projects, not as sign-off on every number.

When must you send the session-start prompt?
Each Copilot chat starts fresh. The brief sheet persists in the file; Copilot's memory of it does not. The session-start prompt reloads context and rules every time.
Do this in Copilot
Open a new Copilot chat in your workbook. Run the session-start prompt and confirm Copilot lists your six rules.
Paste this into Copilot Chat and work through it before moving on.
Session start (every new chat)
Read the Copilot Brief sheet in this workbook before doing anything else, and treat it as the context and rules for this whole conversation. Work from the Clean Data sheet by default; only use the raw data sheet when I explicitly ask. Confirm what you have read and list the rules you will follow.
