Until the identity lives in settings, it is just another message. Copilot Chat only carries it automatically when you put it in the place this product uses for standing personal context.
A draft in a chat is not standing context.
In Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, that is usually Settings → Personalization or Custom instructions. Labels move. Open Settings and look for the field that applies to every new chat.
One primary home. If you also keep a note in OneDrive, that is a backup — not the install.
Core principles
- Install in Copilot Chat settings so new conversations load it without you pasting.
- Do not put confidential client data, passwords, or people issues in a standing brief.
- Review the saved text after paste. Truncation and formatting glitches happen.
- Note where you stored it. You will need that path when your role changes.
Check yourself
When is an identity actually installed?
A chat draft dies with the thread. Standing context has to live in the product setting that loads on every new conversation.
Do this in Copilot
Paste the edited brief into Copilot settings. Confirm it is saved before you close the tab.
Use this to check the draft. The install itself happens in Settings, not in the chat.
Confirm the install path
I use Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat at work. Tell me where standing personal context should live in the current Copilot Chat UI (custom instructions, personalization, memory, or another field). Give the click path as you understand it today, and warn me if labels may have moved. Then ask me to paste my identity block so you can check it is still under 300 words and written as instructions, not a resume. Identity draft: [PASTE YOUR DRAFT].
- In Copilot Chat: open the user/settings menu and look for Personalization, Custom instructions, or Personal preferences. Paste. Save.
- If you cannot find the field, keep the brief in a OneDrive note and paste it at the start of important chats until IT or the UI catches up — then install it properly.
