Verification

AI is an extraordinarily confident writer. It does not hedge the way an uncertain person does. It does not say "I think" or "I'm not sure about this part." It presents everything with the same calm authority, whether it is right or completely fabricated.

Lesson 4

Fluent is not the same as correct.

This is the part that bites people. Not because AI is broken. Because fluency and accuracy are not the same thing, and the writing hides the seam between them.

The accountability map does not change because AI changed the draft speed. If it goes out with your name on it, you own it. That means you verify the things that matter: names, dates, numbers, commitments, anything that could cause a problem if it's wrong.

Fluent writing versus verified facts

Sounds rightIs right
Confident tone is not proof. Names, numbers, and commitments still need you.

Core principles

  1. Assume facts need checking. All of them. Until you have a feel for where this particular tool with this particular task gets things wrong.
  2. Ask it to show its work. "How did you arrive at this?" is a real question. If the reasoning is off, fix the prompt, not just the answer.
  3. Flag what matters most before you start. If a number or a name is load-bearing, tell AI that. "This figure will go to the client, flag any assumption you're making about it."
  4. Build the review step in. Not as an afterthought. As part of the workflow.

The verification prompt

I want you to review the response you just gave me and do three things. First, identify any claim that is a fact rather than an inference, names, numbers, dates, statistics. Second, tell me which of those facts you are certain about and which you are inferring or estimating. Third, flag any place where I should verify before using this. Be specific. Do not just say "verify all facts." Tell me which ones and why.
